Power requirements: the receiving hopper and the Vega 10 run on 220V single phase, 230V three phase or 480V three phase. The basket press MUST run on three phase power, 208, 230 or 480 volt. No three phase? Ask us about affordable phase converters.
The Cider Line
- Carlsen 6' receiving hopper: dump the bin, and the auger feeds the mill at a steady rate.
- Puleo Vega 10 with the apple cutter bar: a coarse mill.
- Carlsen basket press: American made and capable of 5 bar, with an optional spare tub assembly for faster turnaround.
Carlsen 6' Receiving Hopper

Dump a bin of apples into the hopper and the auger delivers a constant, regulated flow to the Vega. Rate of feeding matters more than capacity, on apples the same as on grapes. The hopper holds about a half ton, the top is 72" × 72", and the discharge height adjusts from 62¾" to 107¾". It's all stainless, made in the USA, with a two-year warranty. More on the receiving hopper.
Puleo Vega 10 with the Apple Cutter Bar

The combination of the Vega destemmer with the apple cutter bar inside and the crush rollers set tight produces the result of a coarse mill. Fermenting the ½"-sized chunks with the correct yeast will extract tannin, phenolics and more apple character than just fermenting juice.
It's the same Vega 10 our wineries use at harvest: frequency-drive speed control, a built-in CIP spray ball, an adjustable stand on casters, and parts off the shelf in the U.S. with a 24-month warranty. More on the Vega destemmers.
Carlsen Basket Press

Some kind of press aid, like wheat straw or rice hulls, will help with a higher yield in the basket press. It's American made and capable of 5 bar, with the same 12 program slots as our bladder presses, manual or automatic. For faster turnaround on batches, keep the optional spare tub assembly on hand: fill one while the other is pressing. More on the basket press.

Small Lots: Stainless Barrels and TranStore Tanks

For small lots, trials and blends, our 60 and 30 gallon stainless steel barrels are made in the USA and stack on racks. For bigger batches, TranStore tanks from 250 to 750 gallons are portable and easy to clean, and the 250 through 550 stack three high, full. ENOTOOLS is the distributor for Custom Metalcraft TranStore tanks and barrels in most of the U.S.
Cider Equipment Questions
Can a grape destemmer mill apples?
With the optional apple cutter bar, yes. The Vega 10 with the cutter bar inside and the crush rollers set tight produces the result of a coarse mill, about ½" chunks.
Why ferment apple chunks instead of juice?
Fermenting the ½"-sized chunks with the correct yeast will extract tannin, phenolics and more apple character than just fermenting juice.
What press aid should I use for apples?
Some kind of press aid, like wheat straw or rice hulls, will help with a higher yield in the basket press.
What power does a cider line need?
The receiving hopper and the Vega 10 run on 220V single phase, 230V three phase or 480V three phase. The basket press needs three phase, 208, 230 or 480 volt. No three phase? Ask us about affordable phase converters.
